G40 Richmond, Virginia. USA

G40 Art Summit - Richmond, VA

Taken from the G40 site - "Art Whino returns in 2012 for the Third edition of G40. Following the mission of G40s past, we will once again bring exposure to low brow’s many faces and, as always, present what new facets emerge within this ever growing movement. This year G40 focuses on the "Art of the Mural". In the last 5 years, there have been great bursts of street artists transforming the city’s urban fabric with large scale mural artwork. With their powerful and awe evoking size of over five stories high, these murals transform the landscape of the passerby and create a unique experience to each wall that was once blank and artless". Check this Event out. If only we could all be there.

Brad Kunkle

www.bradkunkle.com

Born in rural Pennsylvania, Brad Kunkle
spent his younger years exploring and
romanticizing the beauty of the sparse
countryside and the deep forests around
him. From an early age he was drawn to
the worlds of Maxfield Parrish and the
Pre-Raphaelites —worlds, he says,
“where a subtle, supernatural beauty
seems to be hiding under the breath of
women —worlds where something
beyond our natural perception is waiting
to be found.”
Brad graduated with a degree in fine arts
from Kutztown University, studying
mostly under George Sorrels, who was
taught by a pupil of the 19th century
Academic painter, William Adolphe
Bougereau. In an effort to discover his
own artistic sensibilities, he worked as a
commission-based portraitist, and began
an almost decade-long journey of
continued self-instruction and
independent study. As a decorative
painter in his mid twenties, he leafed
entire walls in copper. He was beguiled
by the shifting, life-like nature of the
surfaces, and began to incorporate
gilding in his work. This proved to fulfill
the unreal quality he had been looking for
to convey his moody, romantic ideas of
human nature and ritual. In an old
wooden box that holds his paints, he
keeps a slip of paper with a quote from
Pablo Picasso. “You must always work
not just within but below your means. If
you can handle three elements, handle
only two. If you can handle ten, handle
only five. In that way, the ones you do
handle, you handle with such ease, more
mastery and you create a feeling of
strength in reserve.”

Rudy Faber

Rudy Faber

Rudy's artwork is amazingly diverse. This site is an awesome showcase of his ability not only an illustrator, painter but colourist and designer. He started his youthful adventure at age five drawing animals, creatures and dinosaurs. Around the age of ten, fueled by his addiction for ‘beat ‘em up’ video games such as ‘Street Fighter’ He started drawing bulky warriors and ninjas. It was then that he learned he liked to draw figurative drawings and character designs. In his early teenager years his interest for the human figure switched from drawing tough men to drawing women, and to this day this remains his main subject of choice in his personal work.
Check out this site , there's hours of images and the most creative themes. Be nice to own some of this mans work someday. Enjoy

Solo Exhibition

Last year I had an realization. I lived in a home full of framed drawings, paintings and canvas'...everywhere!!! not on the walls but on the floors, all eagerly waiting their turn to be hung. And after moving into a smaller place, the study-slash-studio was starting to feel a little to crammed. So this is it !... I'm exhibiting nine drawings and seven paintings. All in their glory. Finally, they'll be excited to be hung and I'm just excited to be the artist.
Starting this Monday, January 23rd, at acclaimed Melbourne cafe Three Bags Full in Abbotsford.
The exhibition includes a selection of framed original micro drawings and some new large-scale raw canvas works.
So come get a piece of cake or a little piece of me to take home (cherries not included).
I also got a shout out on my favorite blog- INVURT

Walton Ford

Walton Ford

Walton Ford's drawings recall a time when explorers roamed uncharted oceans, when rumors of primeval lands and exotic creatures fed our fears and dreams. Ford is attracted to the most documented of these journeys, which were accounts by western colonialists 'discovering' the east - the Orientalists.

This snippet has been taken from a great article by Kiša Lala.

I can not find any solo web site showcasing Mr Ford's painting. But by googling his images you will be amazed at his imagery and standard.

Welcome to Roq La Rue's website!

Since their opening in 1998, they have been an integral part of the Pop Surrealism/Underground Contemporary art movement. With continuing to exhibit established artists in the genre as well as fostering emerging artists, many of whom go on to great acclaim in the Pop Surrealism and Contemporary art scene. Their emphasis is on art that embodies technical craftsmanship blended with fantastical imagery and visually dynamic narratives. They have amazing events each month and I like to keep an eye out for. Check out there latest show, which opened last night... Enjoy!

Oil Studies

Lately I've decided to concentrate on learning oils. The only hours I have for this is 10.30 - 3.00am. It's been good. I'm keeping written records and documenting each stage so to refer back to what I've learnt. It's interesting starting with something new and giving up to the fact that no matter what you know about painting it doesn't relate to OILS. I've always had a fear about oils but have always known that's where I'll end up in my artistic career. So, in rambling on - here's the second painting I've finished, and with dedication and an open mind here's to many more.

Michael Peck

www.michaelpeckart.com

Michael Peck’s artistic practice is concerned with the sensation of disorientation and dislocation that is often felt within the post modern world. Exploring issues regarding the loss of cultural identity, his work particularly focuses on the effects within minority groups and individuals existing on the fringe who are challenged to assimilate within the larger community.

The scenes in Michael’s paintings are quiet, the participants are paused as they stand withdrawn, juxtaposed against a dynamic population; they are overwhelmed by mass-culture; one which has been composed from the interaction, assimilation and constant change of subcultures. His work looks at the place of the individual within a pluralistic society where a constant shift of values and beliefs leaves a great uncertainty of belonging.

Michael's next amazing exhibition 'THE LANDING' will be held at METRO Gallery is this Wed 16th.
